Hag Stone: Natural Dye Printed Wall Art
A screen printed textile study of a brick, worn down by the tides and washed up in the Firth of Forth. Printed with oak gall and iron dyes on an intensely quilted linen background.
Hag Stones are rocks and stones that have had a hole naturally bored through them by water. In the UK there are many folk superstitions surrounding them, whether they are for keeping witches away or for bringing luck. The bricks that wash up on my local stretch of beach have been worn down by the tides of the Forth, like an industrialised version of the Hag Stone. A 20th Century relic connected to ancient folk beliefs.
This collection of wall hangings is a capsule of my experiences in nature through the seasons in Scotland.
