KATIE CHARLESON

Screen Printed Homewares & Bespoke Textile Design

Born of a love of colour, a fascination with texture and a passion for print.

Katie Charleson is a screen printed homewares designer committed to creating sumptuous, unique textiles. Always leading the design process with colour, her prints create cushions, quilts and interior objects that are modern, bright and desirable.

In 2020, Katie introduced quilting, stitching and appliqué to her output of homewares; it becoming a key component of her practice. Combining print and stitch, Charleson makes work by collaging with fabric; using shapes and colour in an instinctual way. Katie is particularly interested in the juxtaposition of the natural and the man-made form; the right angle and the organic shape, and the tension between the two. She makes compositions with forms and textures, given order with the geometry of seams and stitches.

Katie works exclusively with natural fibres from ethical sources and uses organic fabrics where possible. Many works embrace upcycling and make use of remnants, off cuts and archival fabrics.

She only uses water based inks in her production, and is consciously introducing natural dyes while educating herself on the most environmentally positive way to continue creating textile work.

All of Katie’s products and commissions are hand dyed, hand printed and hand stitched in her Edinburgh Studio. If product manufacture does need to be outsourced, then it is always kept local.

Katie spent the start of 2021 setting up a textile print space in Edinburgh, where she offers print and textile craft workshops. Check the Workshops page for upcoming dates.

In 2017 Katie was very proud to receive a Print Futures Award from The Printing Charity, for her work and expertise in screen printing techniques.

Katie has enjoyed working with some fantastic stores, most notably creating a limited edition collection of screen printed kitchen linens for department store Heal’s. Her bespoke cushions have been commissioned by interior designers in London and UK-wide, and her fashion prints have appeared at London Fashion Week and beyond. She welcomes bespoke commissions and commercial collaborations; you can view her previous work for home and fashion on the Bespoke & Collaborations pages.
