After a lovely break in Majorca & Berlin to get my creativity flowing, I've been looking at past bespoke prints & exclusive textiles that I have created for lovely clients.
This one was especially fun as it was developed as a surprise gift for a dear friend, which involved some sneaky secret meetings with her wonderfully creative & terrifically good-at-surprises partner.
We worked together to collate a selection of images that spoke to us of A; colours, textures and images that suggested her fun, life affirming attitude.
After a selection of drawings and development, I came up with a three layer design of energetic marks & lines, with a distinctly Post Modern feel.I coloured the base fabric using cold water Procion MX dyes, mixed by hand, then two colour layers in contrasting green & deep dark blue. The final layer was made using discharge paste, bleaching out the peach/ pink procion dye with lively brush marks.
I really enjoy using this process, it makes a nice negative space & gives an extra element to the design. The resulting three colour print was transformed by the wonderful pattern cutter & seamstress Maria Pulley into a summery shirt dress, which got a lot of outings at the celebratory holiday a few weeks later.
I love working with clients to develop something really personal & beautiful, that reflects their personality!
More bespoke commissions and collaborations coming up over the next few weeks, so stay tuned & look out for more exciting news from Katie Charleson soon!
